Buying Petrol

The graphs below has been taken from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission website (http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/280309) and tracks the average petrol prices for Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth for unleaded petrol for the last month:

With exception of Perth all the data indicates that motorists, based on the trend over the last month, are better off if they buy their petrol on a Tuesday.

On average, motorists could have saved up to 10 cents a litre if they filled up on a Tuesday, here's the difference that could make to your budget:

Assume you save 10 cents every time you fill up and your tank is 50 litres:

  • savings over a month assuming you fill up once a week (50 x $0.10 x 4) = $20
  • savings over a year assuming you fill up once a week (50 x $0.10 x 52) = $260

$260 a year better off because you filled up on a Tuesday.....easy savings.

Now consider how much more you could save if you used the 4 cents discount supplied by major petrol outlets when you present shop-a-dockets:

  • savings over a month assuming you fill up once a week (50 x $0.14 x 4) = $28
  • savings over a year assuming you fill up once a week (50 x $0.14 x 52) = $364

$364 a year better off because you filled up on a Tuesday and used a shop-a-docket.....easy savings.

Even better still, if you find a good independent petrol outlet, they're bound to be cheaper than the major petrol outlets.

Put a bit more thought into how you purchase your petrol and you'll put a bit more cash in your pocket
